As autumn turns to winter, now is the perfect time to snuggle up with a pint in your favourite pub – or explore new favourites before the festive season is in full swing.
Over the past few months, I’ve been lucky to get involved in some wonderful beer events, including judging at the inaugural Women in Beer Awards. I also headed to London for the Brewers Congress – where Reece Hugill from Donzoko Brewery picked up the Young Brewer of the Year award.
I’ve also been busy with some exciting collaborations, including joining the fantastic team at The First & Last Brewery to brew a special beer for Salford Beer Festival that raises money for charity. I also released the sixth year of Books ‘n’ Beer Pairing with Helen Stanton at Forum Books (the full list is on www.craftbeernewcastle.co.uk).
Meanwhile, my adventures closer to home have included gigs at Pop Recs, The Central Bar, The Cumberland Arms and – new to me – The Engine Room in North Shields, a tiny music venue that really packs a punch! I’ve also checked out the wonderful new Aperture Ale House – which is definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring North Shields.
As we head into the festive season, remember to support local, independent pubs and breweries. Whether you’re stocking up for Christmas, picking up a gift or enjoying a pint, every bit helps keep our beer community thriving. Looking ahead, I’m excited to revisit some of my favourite North East pubs over Christmas and into the New Year. There’s nothing better than cosy pints by the fire, catching up with friends, and soaking up the atmosphere – the perfect way to finish the year and welcome 2026.
