Winter warmers

Where better to start than one of the most incredible dining experiences I’ve had to-date?

I was invited to La Mesa by Proof Drinks to sample the most amazing Mexican-inspired tasting menu by chef Shaun Hurrell – star of the last edition of Appetite. Set below Barrio Comida in Durham, this is a lovely spot for private dining or an extra-special date night. The 10-course tasting menu was exquisite – from the tuna tostadas to the duck tacos. The agave cocktails were fab too!

With the festive season seemingly taking over everything as I write, I thought I’d share a winter warmer and an event to get you into the Christmas spirit.

If you’re planning some festive food activities, check out Triple A Food Tours. Amy Whitfield has been running tours across the region for years, recently expanding to Northumberland and Durham. This December, Triple A has a host of festive tours including Christmas in The Castle, where guests can get a taste of medieval food and get to make their very own gingerbread to take home. You’ll also get to visit some local spots for a tipple or two, in what is sure to be the perfect festive foodie experience. Plus, if you’re stuck for presents, Triple A also offers vouchers for all the tours as well.

For seasonal comfort food, check out The Bonny Comet in Low Fell. The ever-changing seasonal menu never disappoints, and there’s a fantastic drinks selection. Sunday lunches, sharing platters and supper clubs are all recommended – and they’ll be welcoming Hairy Biker Si King in December.
