Fish and chip restaurant Trenchers organised a beach clean on Whitley Bay’s seafront as part of World Ocean Day.
Staff arranged the beach clean to clear litter along the coastline and create a safer environment for locals, keep toxic chemicals out of the water, and protect marine wildlife.
World Ocean Day is the United Nation’s initiative to celebrate the role of oceans in our everyday life and inspire action to protect oceans and sustainably use marine resources.
Following 40 years of success in Whitby, Trenchers took up residency in Whitley’s Spanish City in 2018. In 2020, the restaurant was named the Best Fish and Chip Restaurant in the UK as part of the National Fish and Chip Awards.
General manager Chris Marsh said: “World Ocean Day is a fantastic way to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our oceans and marine wildlife. We wanted to bring attention to the cause and help remove litter from the beach, at sea and in the ocean by arranging a beach clean. I’d like to thank everyone who got involved and urge others to do what they can to protect our oceans’ marine wildlife. At Trenchers, we use sustainably sourced cod and haddock for our fish and chips, have a zero single-use plastic policy, and recycle all of our waste. Wherever possible, we go straight to the source for our product and we will continue our efforts to help create a more sustainable planet.”
