Top judges lined up for British Street Food Award heats in Sunderland

Chef and Hairy Bikers star Si King will be part of the expert judging panel at The Fire Station in Sunderland for the northern heat of The British Street Food Awards.

Nine street food vendors will go head-to-head in the competition’s Northern heat from Friday May 23 to Sunday May 25.

Si will join five other chefs and food experts – 21 Hospitality Group founder Terry Laybourne, Pine co-owner Siân Byerley, Riley’s Fish Shack founder Adam Riley, Food and Drink North East CEO Chris Jewitt, and British Street Food Awards founder Richard Johnson – to sample the vendor’s offerings throughout the weekend and select the winner.

After selling out six of the eight sessions, The Fire Station has released more free issue tickets for the awards, which can be claimed at www.thefirestation.org.uk

The judges will be sharing their feedback in front of a live audience at the 3.30pm session on Sunday. Attendees will also get the chance to have their say on their favourites via a public vote.

The winner of the northern heat will go on to compete in the competition’s final, where the winner will egt the chance to travel to Germany and represent the UK in the grand final of the 2025 European Street Food Awards in Munich.

Vendors taking part include The Greekster, Craving Asian, Sizzling Scoop, Saffa Soul, Chicken Ting, Flying Cows and Sunderland businesses My Delhi, My Sister’s Kitchen, and The Fire Truck.

Si said: “I’ve eaten street food all over the world, but there’s something particularly wonderful about seeing vendors and small businesses from the north of England doing what they love and creating fantastic food. It’s a real pleasure to be involved in The British Street Food Awards – I’m ready to get stuck in!”

The British Street Food Awards are being brought to Sunderland as part of a region-wide partnership between The Fire Station, Food and Drink North East, Sunderland BID, Destination North East, Local Heroes, Sunderland Music City, Sunderland City Council, and Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS).
