Things are finally warming up in the North East and I have three hot new places to visit this summer – each totally different from the last. We’ve got a Metro station brunch spot, small plates on the North Shields fish quay, and a Newcastle classic which has had a huge glow-up.
I headed to The Uncommon, located inside Harbour House in North Shields, recently to try the new menu and, honestly, this place just gets it. Think gorgeous interiors, a chilled atmosphere, and a menu that is full of the kind of food that makes you instantly eye up everyone else’s plates.
We tried a mix of small plates, sharers and seafood dishes, all of which were of the highest quality and locally sourced from just down the road. The UC crisp platter is a must-try and perfect for grazing. The cocktails are some of the best in the region too, and this is definitely one of those places where you accidentally stay way longer than planned.
Meanwhile, a Newcastle foodie favourite has got a whole new vibe. Dobson & Parnell on the Quayside recently reopened after a refurb and it looks so different! There’s a new bar space, open pass, a more relaxed atmosphere, and a new menu. Taking a step away from the traditional a la carte, the team has introduced more sharing-style dishes which suit the space and are perfectly matched with the warm hospitality and quality we know and love here.
Head down to the Quayside for date nights or long catch-up dinners with friends. I’m sure this cool new concept is going to remind a lot of people why Dobson & Parnell has been a Newcastle favourite for so long.
My next stop – quite literally – is brunch at Awesome Franks. Located inside West Jesmond Metro station, which gives it extra points for originality, the brunch here is a cut above the rest. Think stacked sandwiches, avocado toast with a twist, and really good coffee. I love places like this because they make everyday locations feel exciting. We tried one of the monthly bottomless brunches and were very impressed. The food was fantastic, and there was a great drink selection with cocktails from Kocktail too.
If you’re looking for somewhere to try this summer, all of these are well worth a visit.
