Two of the region’s best bakeries were recognised in the National Bakery Awards 2024 – as Northern Rye was crowned best in the North East and Big River Bakery won the Social Enterprise Bakery of the Year prize.
Hosted by Bakery Business magazine, the awards ceremony in London honoured bakeries across the country – with Northern Rye among the regional winners. Meanwhile, Big River Bakery in Shieldfield, Newcastle – a commercial bakery which has had a big impact on its local community through its programmes including breakfast bags for children, baking classes and its work with local charities – won the social enterprise award.
