NHSG pupils serve up Michelin-Starred experience courtesy of Hjem

NHSG x Hjem event

Pupils from Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) put their culinary skills to the test as part of a collaboration with Michelin-starred restaurant Hjem.

Serving an exclusive dining experience on March 18 as part of the school’s 150th Anniversary Bursary Appeal, pupils who will be moving into Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition in September were given the chance to support the Hjem team at the event.

The event, which raised funds to support the school’s accessible bursary scheme, brought Hjem’s blend of local produce and Scandinavian techniques to the school. The evening was curated by NHSG alumna and Hjem co-owner Ally Thompson-Nietosvuori, alongside her husband and head chef Alex Nietosvuori.

“The girls that helped out on the night were fantastic, and their confidence and happy demeanours made training and working with them a real pleasure,” said Ally. “They threw themselves into the opportunity with such enthusiasm and were such great fun. They reminded me of my time at school, and how lucky I was to attend a school that gave me the opportunities I was afforded, and all in a caring and fun environment.”

Meanwhile, the pupils taking part were also enthusiastic about the experience the event gave them. Tonti Ndubuisi said: “It was a really eye-opening experience into the catering industry and the Hjem team was extremely welcoming, it was a great opportunity.”

Isabel Barnett added: “Working alongside the restaurant Hjem was a wonderful experience. I am very grateful I got chosen for this as it will really help me when I am doing Food and Nutrition A-Level. The staff were amazing at showing us what it would be like working in a Michelin star restaurant and the high standards Hjem holds for their staff.”
