Amble-based Sandy Higson, AKA The Mad Jam Woman, found more success at the World Artisan Marmalade Awards – picking up a Gold Award for her Lemon & Ginger with Chilli Marmalade along with four Silver awards for her Lemon & Cointreau; Seville & Cranberry; Orange & Carrot; and Bucks Fizz marmalades.
The judges – including food writer Dan Lepard and Fortnum & Mason grocery buyer Sarah Metcalf – praised the clarity and versatility of Sandy’s marmalades as well as their flavour at the awards, which took place at Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, Penrith, Cumbria. More than 3,000 jars were judged this year, from more than 30 countries including Japan, Canada, Australia, Kuwait and the Dominican Republic.
Sandy said: “I am so pleased to have won these awards against such strong competition from all over the world. I have been making my marmalade for 26 years and have always thought that it is some of the best marmalade I’ve ever tasted, so it’s nice to have the awards to prove it!”
Available online, The Mad Jam Woman’s marmalades, jams and more can be purchased at Alnwick Market every Saturday, and at many local shops.
