In search of cake

We Brits love cake, and new research has found out what we’ve been driven to bake during lockdowns.

Using our Google search data from the last 11 months, Cath Kidston found we’ve developed a passion for banana bread as a nation, with the simple loaves topping the tables in every region of the UK.

In the North East, while banana bread came out on top, we also went in search of birthday cake (second) and chocolate cake (third) more than any others. Cupcakes, carrot cake, red velvet cake, sponge cake and tiramisu were also in the top 10 in the region.

There was also more people looking for international inspiration in the North East, with Boston cream pies (250% increase), Austrain Sachertorte (189%), Eastern European babka (189% increase) and savoury Nordic dish smörgåstårta – which is similar in construction to a layered cake – also growing in popularity.

The research by Cath Kidston, using Google Search Data from April 2020 to February 2021, also found that Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle didn’t make it into the top five searches anywhere in the UK.

The research also found that TikTok is influencing our cake choices, with ‘frog cake’ seeing the biggest growth in searches in all regions and the biggest rise – of 71000% – found in the North East.
