Northumberland Taste Trails

Self-guided food and drink trails reveal Northumberland’s wild side

Visit Northumberland’s Taste of Northumberland programme spotlights the county’s finest food and drink, from incredible producers to innovative dining locations and immersive foodie experiences. Having launched earlier this year, the initiative’s hallmark of quality has been awarded to a wealth of Northumberland businesses who demonstrate artisanal skill, genuine ingredients and locally sourced products.

The newly launched Taste Trails, available on their website, are designed to offer visitors and locals alike self-guided itineraries which celebrate Northumberland’s food heritage and distinctive food and drink experiences.

Trails can be enjoyed on one delicious road trip or woven into an exploration of the county over several days, and provide an ideal way to enjoy the region’s stunning scenery while sampling its exciting range of cuisine.

The Catch The Coast trail showcases the county’s dramatic coastline, taking in celebrated eateries including The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh, Seahouses’ The Buoy Inn, The Whittling House Restaurant in Alnmouth, Jasper’s Bistro in Amble and The Tempus Restaurant in Chathill. The Tea In The Town trail visits iconic market towns where the range of foodie treats include The Courtyard in Pegswood, Alnwick’s Motte & Bailey Restaurant at Bailiffgate Hotel, Ad Gefrin in Wooler and The Blackbird in Ponteland.

We’re most excited about the Wild Eats trail, which ventures across the county’s beautiful rural heartland and uncovers hidden gems and unique dining experiences within wide-open landscapes. At the trail’s heart is a perfect marriage of culinary innovation, welcoming hospitality and rural tradition. Included in the trail is Heatherslaw Corn Mill in Ford & Etal, which has been producing flour for hundreds of years on the banks of the River Till; The Highlander between Ponteland and Belsay is a heritage coaching inn dating back to the 1700s with a gastropub-style menu perfect for families and cosy lunches; Michelin-starred Restaurant Pine at East Wallhouses near Corbridge present generous tasting menus with the region’s stunning produce at the fore; in the heart of the Breamish Valley in Powburn, The Bosk is an elegant place for a meal or overnight stay; while mountain leader and professional chef Chris Reay offers the perfect day out on his Fells Kitchen adventures, which teams gourmet restaurant-quality dining with guided walks in the Northumberland countryside.

No matter how you choose to explore the county, there’s guaranteed to be a delicious treat around every corner!
