Durham restaurant Tia’s Mexican Cantina is set to expand to a second location in Newcastle.
A stalwart of the Durham restaurant scene since it opened at Claypath, Tia’s was taken over by Kaleido Ltd – run by Steven Martin and Gabriel Petre – in 2025 and the team has now taken over a 150-cover site at The Gate in Newcastle.
The ground floor venue is undergoing a renovation to transform it into the Mexican restaurant, which will feature a range of classic Tex Mex dishes along with a selection of celebrity tequilas.
“We are very excited about moving into The Gate,” said Steven. “Tia’s in Durham has always been hugely popular, and we thought the time was right to replicate that success in Newcastle. The menu will reflect all the favourite Tex Mex-style dishes, with a few surprises thrown in at the same time. We can’t wait to open and showcase everything that Tia’s Newcastle has to offer.”
Inge Johnson-Mitchell, centre manager at The Gate, added: “We are looking forward to welcoming Tia’s Mexican Cantina to The Gate, and we know the vibrant mix of Mexican cuisine will be very well received. This will be an excellent addition to the centre, providing a range of favourite dishes – and not forgetting frozen Margaritas – which will really enhance our offering.”
The team is planning to launch the new restaurant in the autumn.
