Summer headliners

Girl About Toon - Autumn 2024

Unlike the weather this summer, the food and drink in the North East has not disappointed! It’s been a real challenge to pick just a few of the highlights from the past few months for this edition as we’ve had so many awesome experiences this summer.

We ventured up to Northumberland to try out the new menu at Bertram’s in Warkworth. Just a stone’s throw from the castle, this quaint little spot is run by the team from The Whittling House. It’s home to high-quality local produce and fab seasonal menus. The highlights included the black pudding and haggis croquettes, crab-crusted hake, and a melt-in-the-mouth wild roe fillet.

Meanwhile, Low Fell has a new addition to its ever-expanding foodie scene. The Place Upstairs is a wine bar perfect for any enthusiast, and there’s a delicious selection of charcuterie too. With a friendly welcome, this stunning spot is ideal to sit back, relax, sip and graze til your heart’s content. Ask for the team’s recommendations for food and wine pairings and you can’t go wrong.

Finally, if you’re a lover of awesome Italian food, you have to check out Sapori in Gateshead. After hearing lots of good things about this casual restaurant, I had to give it a try – and it did not disappoint! Hand-stretched pizzas, authentic fresh pasta dishes and traditional pastries are all fantastic, and this unassuming spot also has a substantial wine list. The seafood pasta was a winner for us and we’re already planning a return visit.
