Organisers of pop-up foodie event 3rdBite Festival, hosted at Wylam Brewery in July, have revealed they raised a record-breaking £129,713.95 for Cancer Research UK.

A hot ticket for North East foodies, 20 Michelin-starred chefs from across the UK served up their refined street food creations, giving attendees a chance to try some unique dishes imaginatively created by their food heroes. Each chef produced 500 portions of their dish, which spanned global tastes and styles, and foodies tucked into such delights as highland wagyu cheeseburger spring roll (Mark Donald, The Glenturret); miso marinated octopus kebabs with miso and salted yuzu sabayon (Johnnie Crowe, St Barts); pot roast shh’annu lamb, leg merguez, bacon kimchi and yoghurt (Paul Leonard, Forest Side); lobster and prawn katsu sandwich with chippy sauce and kewpie (Stuart Ralston, Lyla) and lobster and scallop katafi fried dumpling with black pepper oyster sauce (Josh Angus, HIDE). VIP packages went down a treat and local DJs provided entertainment.

The event is the brainchild of Siân Byerley, co-owner of Restaurant Pine, who said: “Every year the event proves what this industry does best when it comes together. Twenty incredible chefs gave up their Sunday to cook for total strangers, all in the name of raising money for a cause that touches every single one of us. Seeing thousands of people turn up, eat, laugh and dig deep for Cancer Research UK never gets old. This has been our biggest total yet, and it wouldn’t have been possible without everyone who bought a token, bid on the auction, or simply turned up on the day.”
