Blyth’s Ciccarelli Ice Cream and South Shields-based Minchella & Co won big at the 2023 National Ice Cream Championships run by the Ice Cream Alliance (ICA), the sector’s UK trade association.
Ciccarelli topped the judges scores in two categories of the national awards – earning gold for their Blackcurrant Sorbet and White Chocolate Gelato. Meanwhile, Minchella & Co were top of the rankings in the chocolate ice cream category.
Ciccarelli’s Domenico Gregorio (pictured) said: “Last year I won the vanilla class. This year another two trophies for my Blackcurrant Sorbet and White Chocolate Gelato. I feel I am giving the people of Northumberland the best sorbets and ice cream I can make.”
“After a few decidedly difficult years for our industry, ice cream businesses are bouncing back with gusto,” said Katy Alston, ICA president. “Ciccarelli is proof of that with the quality of the products that won these prestigious awards. Big congratulations to Domenico and his team and here’s wishing them a super successful summer season.”
Ciccarelli was started in 1966 by Domenico’s parents Donato and Elena. They had five sons who all worked in the business, which now has many ice cream vans and an ice cream factory in Cramlington serving more than 200 wholesale customers.
