New, old, kid on the block

This is nice – somewhere new to eat in the pretty village of Croft, near Darlington, where the Croft Hotel has had a makeover and launched a new tea room and welcoming gastropub.

The hotel’s family owners, who also own Horton Grange Hotel near Newcastle, have ploughed a seven-figure sum into the restoration of the Grade II-listed hotel, revamping all 20 bedrooms.

The new Croft Gastropub is home to modern British cuisine sourced from select producers and in the tea room, the afternoon tea stars superb cakes and patisserie.

Built in 1835, the Croft is also rumoured to be an inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, standing as it does next to St Peter’s church, where Alice author Lewis Carroll’s father was rector. Who knew, eh?
