First look at STACK Carlisle

The developers behind the STACK leisure container villages have given a first glimpse of how the scheme could look in Carlisle.

Danieli Group announced plans to bring STACK to the town by transforming part of the Lowther Street Car Park in November 2022. They hope it will open in early 2024.

The multi-million-pound investment will see 50 repurposed shipping containers used to create a complex complete with a glass-framed roof. It will be home to five bars, around 10 street food outlets, a central plaza with a balcony, and a stage for live performances.

CGI images showcase what visitors can expect at STACK Carlisle – the site of the former Her Majesty’s Theatre, which is owned by Daniel Johnston (1982) Ltd.

The development will follow in the footsteps of similar schemes which the company has operated at Seaburn in Sunderland and Newcastle.

Neill Winch, CEO of Danieli Group, said: “We are very excited to be moving forward with STACK Carlisle and to be able to give people their first opportunity to see what it could look like when completed. We believe this will be a huge asset to the city and hopefully this imagery will give everyone a real flavour of what they can expect.”

Daniel Johnston’s Max Connon added: “The city has identified the desperate need to reinvent the high street, encourage leisure and to lift the night-time economy. Subject to the council’s approval, we can bring the UK’s leading container park operator to Lowther Street, supporting all three objectives. Since making the application, we have seen that STACK has listened to the council and adapted the design to meet its surroundings.

“It’s clear we are dealing with a socially responsible operator with a business model that attracts young to old. As a result, STACK is being supported in other towns and cities. STACK will compliment all the other council initiatives and support surrounding businesses as footfall will increase. We hope the Council grabs this opportunity to give Lowther Street, and the city, a much needed boost.”

This is the fourth site planned by the Danieli Group as part of expansion plans for the STACK brand – with STACK Middlesbrough recently announced alongside sites in Bishop Auckland, Durham and Lincoln.

The original STACK in Newcastle is also moving to a new permanent home in the city centre, with is currently under construction.
