In the last couple of months, I’ve been exploring some of the best spots for cosy date nights, seasonal menus and a splash of sparkle – because why should summer have all the fun?
Pique in Gosforth is everything a date night spot should be – intimate, stylish and home to some of the best cocktails around. The smoked mezcal negroni is a star, while the menu offers South American soul-inspired plates – from tuna ceviche that’s fresh and zingy to belly pork skewers that melt in the mouth. There are also modern spins on traditional dishes – and if you’re looking for a new brunch spot, that’s covered too!
A firm favourite, Pleased To Meet You has rolled out its autumn/winter menu and it feels like a big hug. Think rich meats, roasted root veg and deep, warming flavours that help you make the most of the evenings even when it’s dark by 5pm. You must try the confit pork belly and pan-seared halibut, while the delicious Sunday lunches are the perfect way to end the weekend on a high. Plus, if you’re looking for somewhere for a festive get-together, I can highly recommend the set menus too.
Finally, I had the pleasure of visiting Cavavin for one of the monthly Champagne tastings recently. We sampled five delicious Champagnes complete with a grazing board, and got to test our knowledge with a pop quiz. The Cavavin team are bursting with insights and they carefully curate the menus with stuff you cannot find in the supermarket. We loved the relaxed, chatty and educational – without being pretentious – experience. Classes run on the last Thursday of every month, and a place at one of these would make a fab Christmas gift. Keep an eye on the Cavavin socials as there are some very exciting changes coming soon too.
