176 Bar & Kitchen opens in Middlesbrough

Pneuma Hospitality Group, the business behind the major refurbishment of Gateshead restaurant and bar SIX Rooftop, has added another site to its restaurant portfolio – 176 Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough.

Having moved in at the end of 2023, the team has undertaken an ambitious programme of investment and refurbishment to breathe new life into the site, which was previously home to two stalwarts of the Middlesbrough dining scene – Ta Moko and Smoke & Mirrors.

A significant initial investment has enabled the team to add extensive kitchen facilities and reimagine the downstairs interiors and bar space. Meanwhile, upstairs will benefit from additional investment too.

As well as a dining and bar offer, the venue will also cater for a wide range of private hire functions and events.

Alongside significant investment, the development of 176 Bar & Kitchen has also created five new jobs, with more to follow in the coming months.

Food director Greg Lambert and 176 Bar and Kitchen’s head chef Megan Mann have developed a contemporary menu celebrating the very best of British, utilising sustainably sourced ingredients from local producers and suppliers.

Light bites on the opening menu include split pea pudding with caramelised mushrooms and soldiers; a sage and onion sausage roll with red onion marmalade; and a chorizo Scotch egg. Small plates include buttermilk fried chicken with green garlic mayo; ham hock terrine with pumpkin piccalilli and sourdough; and crunchy squid with hot lemon butter and tartare sauce. Those with a sweet tooth can then enjoy sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch and vanilla ice cream; and passion fruit crème brûlée.

The same attention to detail has been applied to the drinks as well, with local sourcing at the heart of the offering. Coffee is from local speciality roastery Rounton, with tea from Storm Tea in Blaydon. Selected spirits, including whisky and gin, also come from across the north.

There’s also an extensive wine list, a house cocktail menu, and speciality espresso martini menu – with each expression made with Rounton’s coffee. A selection of local and international craft beers is also available alongside non-alcoholic drinks, juices and sodas.

“176 Bar & Kitchen is the second venue the Pneuma Hospitality Group has created since the close of 2023,” said Greg. “We are determined to create a series of vibrant venues across the north – spaces that breathe new life into the buildings they inhabit, which people want to visit time and time again. Each location in our portfolio has its own distinctive character, which is underpinned by our simple ethos – to deliver friendly and relaxed service against the backdrop of a contemporary dining and bar space, serving locally sourced produce to our guests that support the both the local economy and help us play our part in reducing our impact on our surroundings.”
